Half Day Trip
The Chilkat Valley boasts the world's largest concentration of
Bald Eagles. Every fall thousands of these majestic birds migrate
to the Chilkat, where they spend the winter feeding on salmon
in the unfrozen sections of the river. During the summer months
a large number of these eagles remain in the valley. As we float
silently along, scores of eagles can be seen and photographed
perched in the trees and stumps along the shoreline. Grizzly bears,
black bears, and wolves also feed on the spawning salmon and occasionally
we see them roaming the river banks. There are also many moose
inhabiting the lush forests of the valley. The Chilkat Indians
have lived in harmony with the river and the valley for nearly
two centuries at their riverside village of Klukwan. Above all
this beauty the spectacular peaks of the Chilkat Mountains loom
high into the sky. Icy blue glaciers tumble from the lofty heights,
carving away the mountains, grinding the rock into dust. This is one
of the premier tours from Haines and Skagway. This tour is available
as a shore excursion or independent tour. |
