Tlingits were the first settlers to the area and called Haines "Dei-shu" meaning "The End of the Trail". The area is still rich with Tlingit culture and history.

Air Service:
The easiest way to get to Haines is from Juneau, the state capital.

From Juneau there are many flights daily with local commuter airlines that make the 35-minute trip to Haines.

Ferry Service:

    The Haines Skagway Fast Ferry is the easiest and most efficient way to travel between Haines and Skagway.


    The Alaska Marine Highway operates daily ferries from Juneau, Bellingham, Skagway and all other ports. (800) 642-0066

Regular ferry - 4.5 hours to or from Juneau / 1 hour to or from Skagway
Fast Ferry - 2.5 hours to or from Juneau / 45 minutes to or from Skagway

Highway Travel:
    The Haines Highway is a State Scenic Byway and one of the most spectacular drives in North America, with high peaks, glaciers, rivers and lakes all along the way. It connects with the Alaska Highway in Haines Junction, 155 miles north in the Yukon Territory; allow 3-1/2 hours driving time. The highway is well paved and maintained year-round. There are lodges & campgrounds along the highway.
